Mangaluru: Two inscriptions, one in Portuguese and another Halekannada found

Mangaluru: On the technology wing campus of the College of Fisheries at Hoige Bazar in Mangaluru, two inscriptions have been found, among the inscriptions found one is in Portuguese and another in Halegannada (old Kannada).

The estampage of the inscription has been taken by a team of inscription experts from Mysuru to conduct an in-depth study. The preliminary studies reveal that the Kannada inscription has 11 lines and belongs to the 11th century.

Experts Sridevi Tejaswini and Veera Manikantan informed that there is a need to conduct an in-depth study into the inscription in the Portuguese language.

During an excavation work taken up after demolishing an old building for the construction of skill development and safety training center took up under Smart City project, the inscriptions were unearthed.

“The inscriptions are five foot tall and are kept on a side where the work on the building has been taken up,” informed Senthil Vel, Dean of Fisheries College.

Further adding, “The inscriptions were noticed by Shreyas, a third-year BFSc student on March 13, he clicked a picture on his mobile and brought it to my notice.” Following which the dean sent n email to PMO’s office immediately. He received a reply stating that Archaeological Survey of India director general Vidyavathi has directed ASI experts in Mysuru to examine the inscriptions.

“A report on the inscriptions will be published in the Annual Report on Indian Epigraphy and that the inscription can be preserved either in Fisheries college or in a museum by the urban local body,” said Veera Manikantan, inscription expert.
