Mangaluru/Udupi: The authorities have declared a two-month fishing ban along the coast of Mangaluru and Udupi, effectively prohibiting all fishing activities by mechanized boats, motorized boats exceeding 10 horsepower, and conventional boats employing nets or other gear.
The ban, spanning from June 1 to July 31, will encompass a total of 61 days.
However, small-scale coastal fishing will still be permitted, allowing motorized engines of up to 10 horsepower solely for the transportation of boats, conventional vessels, and barges engaged in fishing endeavors.
Emphasizing the significance of adhering to this government directive, the joint director of fisheries, in an official statement, urged all fishermen to cooperate in the implementation of the policy.
The decision, made with the best interests of coastal fishermen in mind, aims to safeguard the marine resources vital to their livelihoods.
Those found in violation of the fishing ban will be subjected to penalties prescribed under the Karnataka Sea Fisheries Act-1986. Additionally, offenders will face disqualification from receiving diesel subsidies for a duration of one year.
The district administration, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, will monitor and enforce the fishing ban strictly. Fishermen and fishing boat owners are urged to extend their full cooperation, ensuring the successful implementation of this crucial conservation measure.
