Mangaluru: The current water level at Thumbay vented dam is at 2.95m and if it is to be supplied to Mangaluru city on a daily basis, then there is enough water only for 8 more days!
This available water will be available to the city in a couple of days and has naturally led to some fear.
As per the rationing rule, pumping of water has been stopped from May 28th 6am and the water will be re-supplied from 6 am June 1st. Water will be supplied for the next 4 days (if not revised). There only enough water to be supplied for four days after the interval of no supply of water for four days post the supply of water for four days from June 1st. if in case there is no rain until then, there is no answer regarding the next step.
On the occasion of supplying water to Mangaluru, the water depletes by around 15cm per day but by four days, the water level is reduced by around 60cms. As per this calculation, there is enough water to be supplied for only 8 more days.
If the water level at Thumbay dam drops completely, then the wells and borewells in the city will become the last resort. But in the backdrop of these wells lacking enough amounts of water to satiate the needs of the city, there is a possible chance for fear.
One year since the floods; absolutely no rain this time!
On May 29th, a year passes by when Mangaluru received incessant rains resulting in floods. The drop in air pressure resulted in the city receiving 36.8cm of rain in a mere 6 hours’ time gap. The artificial floods caused due to the torrential rain damaged several houses. Houses lying in low altitude areas incurred more damage. Along with Mangaluru, Dakshina Kannada district suffered damages worth Rs 20.74 crore. Two persons also lost their lives during this occasion.
Udupi: Pumping continued
Udupi: The water level at Baje dam across Swarna river is dropping by the day and presently, water is being pumped from the lower region of Puttige bridge. Water has been supplied to select few wards and currently, water is only available at at the lower region of Puttige bridge.
