Mangaluru: The Additional District and Sessions Court (FTC-II) in Mangaluru has sentenced an accused to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 in a POCSO case.

The convict has been identified as 24-year-old Mohammed Sadiq.

The court also directed the District Legal Services Authority to provide Rs 6.5 lakh as compensation to the survivor under the Victim Compensation Scheme.

Case Details:

The accused, Mohammed Sadiq, a resident of Nandavara Kotemane of Sajipa Munnur in Bantwal, had befriended the minor girl through a mobile phone and lured her with promises of marriage. Exploiting the absence of family members during the girl’s mother’s illness in 2023, Sadiq repeatedly sexually assaulted the victim. The abuse resulted in the girl becoming pregnant, prompting her mother to file a complaint at the Bantwal Town Police Station.

Court Proceedings:

During the trial, Sadiq denied the charges, but DNA evidence conclusively proved his paternity of the child born to the survivor. The prosecution, led by Special Public Prosecutor K. Badrinath Nayari, examined 20 witnesses, including police officials and medical experts. Investigating Officer Ananth Padmanabha K.V. submitted a detailed charge sheet, which played a crucial role in securing the conviction.

Verdict and Compensation:

On January 25, Judge Manu K.S. pronounced the verdict under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. In addition to the 20-year jail term and Rs 50,000 fine, the court ordered the District Legal Services Authority to compensate the survivor with Rs 6.5 lakh under Section 357(A) of the Criminal Procedure Code and the Victim Compensation Scheme.
