A resident of Badagabettu was defrauded of Rs 2.19 lakh by scammers who impersonated police officers.

The victim, Ravindra received an anonymous video call from individuals claiming to be police officers on November 6 when he was in Manipal.

The caller alleged that his Aadhaar number had been misused in a drug-related case registered at Alambagh Police Station in Uttar Pradesh. The scammers, speaking in Hindi, further claimed that his Aadhaar number was linked to multiple criminal cases, including charges of sedition.

Under the pretext of verifying his bank account details, they instructed him to transfer Rs 2.19 lakh to a different account. They assured him that after deducting verification charges, the remaining amount would be refunded. However, after transferring the money, Ravindra realized he had been scammed as the fraudsters cut off communication.

A complaint has been filed at the Manipal police station, and authorities have launched an investigation into the cyber fraud.
