Manipal: A person was killed and another was severely injured in a collision between a tipper and a bike near Shantinagar on the Alevoor-Manipal road.

The deceased is Janardhan and the injured is Santosh, the motorbike rider. He sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Manipal.

The tipper truck involved in the accident, allegedly transporting sand illegally, has been seized by Manipal police.

Upon inspecting the accident site, police discovered that the tipper was carrying approximately 2.5 units of sand. It was revealed that the truck driver and owner were transporting sand without proper permits, violating regulations.

Residents have expressed concerns over the frequent movement of tipper trucks involved in illegal sand transportation during nighttime along the Alevoor-Manipal stretch. These trucks, traveling at high speeds on the narrow, curvy roads, make it hazardous for other vehicles. Locals are urging the police and mining department to take stringent action.

Illegal nighttime sand transport

Though there are strict regulations for sand transportation, they are often flouted during nighttime. While inspections are conducted during the day, illicit sand transport continues unchecked at night, especially in urban backroads and rural areas. This unchecked activity has created fear among other road users, who find it difficult to drive safely.

The police have taken custody of the tipper truck and its driver and are conducting further investigations into the incident.
