Manipal rape and murder case: Absconding accused held

Udupi: A day after a rape-accused man escaped from police custody while being shifted to Hiriadka jail, the Udupi police on Monday, April 1 arrested him from near Hiriadka here.
The accused, Hanumanthappa,30, was earlier arrested on March 29 in connection with the rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl at Sagri in Manipal on March 9.
On Sunday March 31, Hanumanthappa was produced before the judge and was being escorted back to the jail when he managed to escape the police.
A manhunt had been launched for Hanumanthappa in nearby areas. Acting on a tip-off, the police arrested Hanumanthappa from a house where he had taken refuge.
