Uppunda: A youth feared drowned after being swept away by a wave at the Trasi-Maravanthe beach here on Tuesday.

The youth has been identified as Peer Nadaf (21) of Meundi Village, Mundaragi taluk of Gadag district.

The incident occurred when three youths, including Peer, hailing from Gadag were on their way to their hometown from Mangaluru on a tanker truck. They had halted at the beach at Maravanthe to take a break.

When Peer was clicking photographs on his mobile phone, a huge wave swept him away.

A search and rescue operation was launched soon after, in coordination with local swimmers, divers, fire brigade, coast guards, and Gangolli Police.

However, the operations were hampered by the heavy rains that lashed the area in the evening. Due to rough seas, the operation was temporarily suspended. Peer is yet to be located.
