Mayor instructs officials to install signboards in city

Mangaluru: Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) Mayor Bhaskar K on Tuesday instructed officials to initiate measures to install signboards in different parts of the city, for the convenience of visitor within a week’s time.
During the monthly meeting held on Tuesday, the mayor was informed that the installation of signboards at identified places in the city would be taken up by December end. Objecting to this the Mayor said that the work could not be kept pending till December-end and needs to begin within a week as lack of signboards was causing inconvenience to visitors.
Corporator Abdul Rauf drew his attention to the problem of illegally parked vehicles along the roadside that cause traffic congestion. Traffic police fail to initiate action against such offenders he alleged.
Councillors also alleged that petty shop vendors have occupied footpaths as well as parking place at various areas in the city and opined that the corporation was not doing much to evict such vendors.
MCC Commissioner Mohammed Nazir said that though the corporation has been evicting vendors on a timely basis they start their business in the same spot again after some days. He also highlighted that the civic body faced manpower shortage to keep evicting vendors again and again and said that police action was necessary to end the menace.
Corporator Deepak Poojary said that the progress of the second phase of the ADB funded projects should be informed in the council, to ensure that the mistakes committed in the first phase do not recur in the second phase.
When Corporator Appi said that unscientific UGD pipes have been laid at Kanakara Bettu in her ward, the Mayor said that he will inspect the spot to take a stock of the work.
