Mangaluru: Mayor Premananda Shetty on Friday, May 21 urged the public to segregate dry and wet waste before it is handed over to the civic workers.

Speaking in a press meet here, the mayor said, “A few civic workers have been infected with the   Covid-19 virus as they involve in the segregation of waste. I request the public to segregate the waste which will help in solid waste processing. Scientific segregation of the waste should be done compulsorily. Also, the bio-medical waste from the quarantine and isolation houses will be disposed of as per the government guidelines.”

He further said, “MCC has formed a task force to tackle the pandemic. A nodal officer has been appointed for each ward. The ward committee task force will identify the primary and the secondary contacts of Covid-19 patients and necessary treatment will be given to them.  A mobile swab collection team has been started. Home isolation kits also are being provided to patients in home isolation. 5 Indira canteens under the limits of MCC is providing three free meals per day.”

Municipal Commissioner of the Corporation Akshay Sridhar said that apart from the rule on waste segregation a fine of  Rs 5,000 to Rs 25000 will be imposed if waste is disposed of or thrown on roadsides.
