The Commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation has issued a stern warning to business owners within the city limits, stating that failure to use at least 60% Kannada on their signboards will result in the cancellation of their business licenses.

In an official press release, the Corporation emphasized that, in accordance with the government’s language policy, all commercial enterprises, industries, businesses, trusts, consultation centers, hospitals, laboratories, entertainment centers, and hotels operating in the state must display Kannada language prominently, constituting 60% of their signboards.

The Corporation has mandated that business licenses will only be issued to enterprises that comply with this rule by prominently featuring Kannada on their signboards. During the renewal or issuance of new business licenses, the compliance with this language policy will be strictly verified. It has been observed that many business owners are adhering to the government’s policy by displaying Kannada signboards.

However, there have been numerous public complaints regarding some business owners who continue to use signboards predominantly in English, disregarding the Corporation’s directive. Consequently, the Corporation has made it mandatory for all business owners within its jurisdiction to prominently display Kannada on their signboards. The Commissioner has warned that any business found violating this rule will have its license revoked without prior notice.
