M’gluru’s 15 junctions to get ‘smart’ CCTV cameras

Mangaluru: To keep an eagle’s eye watch on the city, 15 prominent and crowded junctions in the city will have the most advanced CCTV cameras installed under the Smartcity project.

They include Bejai KSRTC, Pumpwell, Vamanjoor, Padil, Mullikatte, Bejai, Bendoor, Falnir, Morgans Gate, Kulashekara-Shakthinagar Cross, Kottara Chowki, Kuntikan, Rao & Rao Circle, Padavinangady and Kavoor junctions.

These junctions will receive approximately 75 cameras to check crime and aid in solving the cases of murder and robbery in the city. A ‘smartpole’ will be installed there with each pole containing about five cameras along with a 360 degree swivelling camera.

The control room to manage and monitor the feeds from these cameras is ready on the first floor of the municipal corporation building. The setting up of the poles too will be completed in a few days, stated municipal officials.

Presently, more than 2000 CCTV cameras are operational in the city’s houses, apartments and commercial buildings.

The Karnataka Public Safety (Measures) Enforcement Act, 2017 stipulates that all commercial buildings, bus stands, educational institutions, residential houses, offices and other multi-storied buildings must install CCTV cameras. Additionally, public spaces and places where a large crowd might gather too must be covered by CCTV cameras.

The Act states that police must execute strict actions against violators of the Act’s rules.
