M’luru has the highest amount of malaria cases in the state

Mangaluru: The number of malaria and dengue in the district are on the rise and apparently, around of malaria cases in the state have been reported from Mangaluru.

Sufficient measures for prevention of epidemics have been taken by the district health department and Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), yet they have fallen short of controlling malaria and dengue.

Since January this year, as many as 494 cases of malaria are reported in the district with the majority of them being in Mangaluru. A total of 470 Malaria cases have been identified within MCC limits. Around 16 cases have been reported from Mangaluru taluk, four in Bantwal and two cases in Puttur and Belthangady respectively. Sullia however has been free of any cases yet.

Mangaluru health department had conducted a survey in more than 300 houses of Mahakalipadpu and Emmekere and found 30 people suffering from fever in Mahakalipadpu alone. While four cases confirmed positive for dengue, 18 others had symptoms of Dengue.

Mobile anti-malaria unit

“A mobile anti-malaria unit will visit homes and undertake blood tests. The unit will be functional in Mangaluru for 24 hours/day. Free medical treatment also is provided.

“We should clean our environment to make sure that mosquitoes do not multiply. Mosquitoes are more in Mangaluru,” said Dakshina Kannada district health officer Dr Ramakrishna Rao. Malaria is transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes.
