Mangaluru: A huge quantity of drinking water is being wasted as a pipe near Capitanio in the city has been leaking for several days. Locals have alleged that the administration has not paid any attention to the problem despite repeated complaints.
The road repair work, between the Padil-Pumpwell stretch, is currently in progress under the Smart City Project, near the site. About a month ago, the main pipeline supplying water to the city burst when the earth was being dug. The leak was later repaired.
But, the repairs have not stopped the leakage, locals said. About 15 days ago, clues to a possible leak were again noticed as the pit dug for repairing the pipe was filled with water. The water-filled pit is a clear indication of another leak, they alleged.
The leak needs to be addressed immediately as the summer is fast approaching and the city could possibly face water shortages due to reduced water inflow at Thumbe dam, locals said.
Wasting water by not repairing the leaking pipe is could prove costly, locals said, and urged the MCC officials and elected representatives to visit the leakage site and take up necessary repairs.
