M’luru: Open burning of waste causing environmental pollution in Adyar Kannur

Mangaluru: Despite local administrations implementing scientific measures to dispose of waste, incidents of open burning continue in various areas. For some time now, waste has been dumped and set on fire near Adyar-Kannur on the city’s outskirts, with the resulting smoke causing environmental pollution in the surrounding areas.
Waste is reportedly being piled and burned near the interior of the Netravati River banks. Burning plastics and other waste materials emits thick smoke that spreads across the vicinity. Often, the waste is set ablaze in the evenings, and the smoke lingers for up to two to three days. This impacts not only the local environment but also spreads to the nearby national highway, posing visibility issues for motorists. The odour from the burning plastics is intense, leading to local air pollution.
The area borders the jurisdictions of the city corporation and Adyar Gram Panchayat, making it unclear who is responsible for the waste dumping and burning. Residents are urging authorities to identify the source of the waste, impose fines on those causing environmental damage, and take preventive steps to ensure such incidents do not recur.
Where is the waste being burned?
Heading from Adyar Cross along the National Highway towards Kannur, a mud road has been created to the left just before Mata Nursery, about 100 meters from which waste is being dumped. The area also has coconut groves nearby. Tire tracks from vehicles, likely trucks transporting waste, are visible in the area, with building debris and plastic waste piled up along with other materials.
