Mangaluru: The City Police Commissioner Sandeep Patil has decided to more effectively implement the use of social media with the aim to put an end to the narcotic drugs and cricket betting occuring in the city.

In an attempt by the city police to become even more people friendly, the digital displays installed within the commissionerate limits is presently displaying the message “Dear Mangalore Citizens. Contact police Commissioner for any problems or sharing info on [email protected] via email or Whatsapp to 9480802300.” The aim of the message is to inform the people to approach the cops for any information, guidance or assistance, thereby depicting the cops to be people friendly indeed.

Police Commissioner Active online

Even as the Whatsapp number and email ID is being displayed on the digital display, there is a good response to it from the public. The Police Commissioner is getting more active on social media and his activity is complimented with hundreds of complaints already flowing to his account while the concerned officials are looking into the issues. Importantly, based on the information provided by a citizen to the official social media handle of the police, a successful raid was conducted at a hotel in Surathkal. The police seized 500 gm of ganja, and also arrested 3 persons who were smoking weed and four persons were subjected to interrogation. Social media played a vital role in helping the cops solved the case.

Local administration not active on social media

In the backdrop of the present technology, the city corporation is not active enough on social media. Although there is a ‘Mangaluru City Corporation’ Facebook page, unnecessary issues get posted on it. Besides, the Deputy Commissioner’s office does not have an official social media handle. Even though there is an FB page do the DC, it lacks any activity. Dakshina Kannada ZP has its own Facebook page and information is being posted on it,

Response to requirements

Currently, there is official Twitter handles from the Prime Minister and President to the Gram Panchayats making it convenient for the public.

People friendly police force

The city police is active on Twitter and Whatsapp. I personally inspect the Twitter account. I request senior police officials to open an account on social media with the aim to become people friendly – Sandeep Patil, City Police Commissioner

Convenient to notice problems

With the aim to become more people friendly, MCC will be starting its own official social media handle in the coming days. This will make it convenient to get information regarding the problems being faced by the people – Mohammed Nazeer, MCC Commissioner
