Mangaluru: As the Monsoon approaches, the Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (Mescom) has asked the public to follow essential electrical safety protocols. It has warned people not to conduct unauthorized electrical repair works such as repairing electrical connections themselves or climbing electric poles.

Mescom has stressed the importance of not touching broken or uninsulated electrical wires, and advised against climbing power poles or attempting any repairs without professional expertise. The company highlighted the critical need for electrical appliances to be repaired by certified experts. Additionally, Mescom advised that switches and equipment should never be touched with wet hands to avoid the risk of electrocution.

The distribution company also warned against trying to remove tree branches that have fallen on power lines. Instead, residents are urged to contact the local Mescom office or Mescom linemen immediately in such situations.

Mescom further advised the public to avoid playing near electric wires and to refrain from hanging clothes to dry near power lines. It is essential not to touch wire fences surrounding transformers.

Additionally, the public should avoid connecting multiple appliances to the same circuit and keep switchboards out of the reach of children. Flammable materials should not be stored near electrical appliances or sockets, and open coal should not be used to heat water, it said.

The statement also included specific advice for those transporting goods under power lines, emphasizing the need to avoid contact with power lines, especially when handling iron rods during construction. Electrifying wire fences is strongly discouraged, it added.

Mescom highlighted the legal implications of obtaining unauthorized electricity connections. They instructed that any repair work on tube wells under or adjacent to power lines must be reported to the Mescom office. The use of electrical equipment bearing the ISI mark is recommended to ensure safety standards are met.

In compliance with building construction rules, a safe distance must be maintained between power lines and buildings. Ensuring the earthing of the third pin in electrical connections is vital. Additionally, precautions must be observed when using aluminum ladders and poles.

For electricity-related complaints and assistance, Mescom has provided a toll-free number: 1912.
