Mangaluru: The monsoon has exceeded its long-term seasonal average well before the end of the season, with the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi experiencing above-average rainfall. Despite a month left in the monsoon season, these districts have already received more rain than usual.
The monsoon season along the coast typically lasts from June to the end of September, with an expected rainfall of 3,101 mm. As of September 1, the region has already recorded 3,327 mm of rainfall.
Currently, Dakshina Kannada has received 7% more rain than usual, Udupi 8% more, and Uttara Kannada a significant 31% more. Overall, the coastal region has seen 18% more rainfall than the average, with 3,327 mm recorded against the expected 2,811 mm. This marks the first time in four years that the region has received above-average rainfall; the last time this occurred was in 2020.
The monsoon entered the Kerala coast on May 30 and reached the Karnataka coast by June 2 this year. However, until mid-June, there were no signs of the rainy season in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.
Typically, the arrival of the monsoon is accompanied by cloudy weather and heavy rain with winds for a few days. However, for two to three weeks, these districts did not receive the expected rain. It was only from late July to August that heavy rainfall was recorded along the coast.
