Heavy rains over the past few days have caused extensive damage in various parts of the taluk, including house collapses, wall failures, bridge collapses, and road washouts.
In Nellikaru village, the house of Gopi collapsed around 10 PM on Wednesday, July 31, due to heavy rainfall. Gopi (56), who was living with his children and grandchildren, suffered severe injuries. Despite being immediately taken to Hosmaru Hospital and later to Karkala Government Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries later that night.
This incident marks the first fatality in the taluk during this monsoon season. The mud wall collapse caused the house to fall on Gopi, while his children, Ganesh, Rajesh, and Satish, managed to escape, avoiding serious injuries. All the children are daily wage laborers.
Local MLA Umanath Kotian, Tahsildar Pradeep V. Kurdekar, RI Manjunath, Nellikaru Panchayat President Uday Poojary, PDO Prashanth Shetty, Secretary Damodar, and staff members Prashanth Jain and Lakshman visited the site to assess the situation and take necessary action.
