Raichur: A woman has been alleged of murdering her 24-year-old pregnant daughter by slitting her throat in a suspected case of honor killing.

The victim identified as Renuka Shankrappa Naik was three months pregnant at the time of the incident.

Renuka’s husband Shankrappa Naik, a Raichur native belonging to the Lambani community accused his mother-in-law Marevva Mahadeva Pujari belonging to the Halumatha community of Shiravara village in Manvi taluk of Raichur district of murdering his wife on Tuesday evening.

According to the Nidagundi Police, Shankrappa and Renuka had married against the wishes of their family few years ago and had maintained a distance from Renuka’s family as they would often threaten the couple. Recently Renuka is said to have contacted her mother and urged her to visit her as she was pregnant.

On Tuesday, Marevva along with her elder son Mallikarjun (35) and the husband of her younger daughter Ramesh Guli (24) visited the couple and urged them to forget the past differences. Later when Shankarappa left for his shop, they tried to convince Renuka to break her marriage but when she did not heed the trio allegedly murdered her by slitting her throat and fled the scene.

Sensing something suspicious on seeing the trio flee from the house, neighbors checked on Renuka to find her lying dead. They immediately informed Naik, who rushed back home.

The police has detained all the accused in the case and a case has been registered under IPC 302.
