Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta has urged Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu to grant “Point of Call Status” to Mangaluru Airport to facilitate more direct international flights from Gulf, Europe, and Southeast Asian countries.

During his meeting with the minister in New Delhi, Capt. Chowta highlighted the growing passenger and cargo handling capacity of Mangaluru Airport. He emphasized the need for enhanced foreign direct connectivity to cater to the demand and foster the all-around development of the coastal region.

The MP explained how granting “Point of Call Status” would bring economic and social benefits to the area. Discussions also focused on airport expansion and adding more flight routes.

Mangaluru Airport plays a vital role in connecting Karnataka to global cities. However, the number of direct international flights remains limited compared to its modern infrastructure and increasing passenger and cargo demands.

Point of Call Status would address this gap and enable direct flights to the Middle East, Europe, and other regions. Additionally, it would boost the export of arecanut, cashew, oil products, and seafood, aiding the economic growth of the coastal region, Capt. Chowta stated.

He further noted that granting this status would enhance tourism and industrial growth in the coastal belt. It would also provide direct air connectivity for entrepreneurs from Gulf countries to destinations like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha. Captain Chouta stressed the urgency of granting this recognition to Mangaluru Airport in his appeal.

Under international aviation agreements, specific airports are designated for direct flights, known as “Point of Call” (PoC). This system enhances connectivity between nations, offering passengers more choices and convenience.

Meeting with External Affairs Minister

On Thursday, Captain Chowta also met Union External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar to discuss various issues. He drew attention to the challenges faced by NRIs of coastal origin across the globe. During the meeting, Captain Chowta presented the minister with a framed photograph of the iconic Kambala sport, symbolizing the cultural heritage of the region.
