New Delhi: Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha and Sherpa to G7 and G20 Suresh Prabhu has urged that an airport in the country be named after Mangaluru-born former Union minister late George Fernandes.
Writing to the Minister of Civil Aviation Hardeep Singh Puri, Prabhu said that Fernandes was a labour union organiser a fervent agitator who fought against the Emergency. Adding that the strike led by him of railway workers in 1974 was monumental and historical in redressing the grievances of the workers, therefore, he deserved the honour.
Long-time MP from Mumbai and later from Muzaffarpur in Bihar, Fernandes had died on January 29, 2019.
