The disease has been identified in various parts of the district, including Mangaluru and Mudipu. Mumps is known to be highly contagious, posing a greater risk to those with compromised immune systems. It spreads from person to person, and the incubation period for the virus is reported to be between 10 to 15 days.

Early symptoms of Mumps include fever, headache, and sore throat. Subsequently, pain near the ear gland and swelling in the vicinity become apparent. The jaw thickens and becomes extremely painful for approximately five days.

Dr. Thimmaiah, the District Health Officer for Dakshina Kannada, taking to Udayavani said, “the disease appears due to the spread of the virus. It is more common in children. Rest is important for healing. If the disease is found, consult a doctor.”

He assured that efforts are being made to gather information on the prevalence of Mumps disease in different parts of the district, and precautionary instructions will be issued accordingly.
