Mysuru: During the heavy downpour in the city, an elderly man was swept away by torrential water in an open drain on Sunday as his helpless family watched on.

The deceased has been identified as M Chandregauda (60), a resident of Vinaya Marga in Siddhartha layout.

Sources said that Chandregauda accidentally slipped and fell into the stormwater drain next to his house when he was watching the rising water level. The drain meets the canal connecting the fountain lake of Mysuru.

The family members who saw him slip and wash away immediately informed the fire-rescue department.

Even in the pouring rain, the rescue crew resumed the search operation, but couldn’t locate the man.
