Mysuru: Kuvempunagar Police have apprehended a fraudster for his involvement in a series of scams targeting middle-aged and widowed women.
The accused, identified as Mahesh (35), hailing from Bengaluru’s Banashankari Layout, would marry these women and abscond with their cash and valuable gold ornaments.
Following a complaint lodged by Hemalatha, a resident of Mysuru, a case was registered, leading to Mahesh’s arrest. The police have seized two cars, Rs 2 lakh in cash, a bracelet, a ring, two gold bangles, a necklace, and seven mobile phones from the accused.
Mahesh, who used the alias of a doctor, came into contact with Hemalatha through the matrimonial website Shaadi dot Com. Presenting himself as a respectable doctor, he gained her trust, eventually marrying her. However, after the marriage, Mahesh disappeared with Hemalatha’s money and gold. Later, Hemalatha reported the incident to the Kuvempunagar police.
During interrogation, it was discovered that Mahesh had swindled approximately 15 women by posing as a doctor, engineer, and civil contractor. He employed similar tactics with each victim, exploiting their vulnerability. The victims were lured into believing his claims and promises.
In response to this recurring issue, City Police Commissioner B Ramesh advised caution to women, urging them not to place blind trust in marriage websites and their offers. He emphasized the importance of thorough evaluation and decision-making before proceeding with any such arrangements.
