Mysuru: For the first time in the state, the forest department is using a thermal camera drone for a leopard rescue operation. These types of cameras are usually used in border patrols and military operations.
The clever leopard, prowling T Narsipur and nearby areas, has been evading capture for the past two weeks. The spotted big cat has been taking cover in the sugarcane fields, hampering rescue operations.
With no other options left, forest officials have now turned to technology to aid their rescue operation. A drone fitted with thermal imaging cameras has been deployed into action.
What is a thermal camera drone?
A thermal camera detects the changes in the temperature emitted by objects. Warm-blooded animals give out a heat signature as thermal radiation and it can be detected by these cameras whether it’s day or night time.
The forest department intends to use this capability to locate the big cat believed to be hiding in sugarcane fields. A team of five skilled experts has been employed for this.
