Mysuru: An incident where a physical education teacher successfully aided in the childbirth of a pregnant woman at a park was reported from here.
Mallige, a resident of Konangeri in Virajapet taluk of Kodagu district, started having labour pains soon after alighting from the bus at Mysuru with her two children. She walked into a park and rested there.
Meanwhile, a physical education teacher, Shobhakumari, on her way to duty, saw people gathered around Mallige and on learning of the situation called an ambulance.
As Mallige’s labour pains increased, she performed the childbirth on the spot with instruction from a doctor over the phone.
Shobhakumari, who performed the humanitarian task, teaches physical education at the government school in Nanjangud taluk’s Naviluru village.
Nearby tea shop owners, also helped in the childbirth by providing tarpaulins and clothes.
Mallige’s husband had deserted her and she was working in a hotel in Mysuru. She had gone to her father’s house two days ago and returned to the city on Tuesday.
The mother and baby both are reported to be safe.
