Bengaluru: Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, the scion of Mysuru royal family visited the 88-year-old Asiatic Building housing Bengaluru’s first Janata Bazaar in Gandhinagar demanded its restoration.
Addressing presspersons after his visit he said, “The structure has to be restored, not demolished. This built-in-heritage is part of Bengaluru’s narrative. It was constructed at the height of the golden age of Mysuru royals. We should preserve it.”
It may be recalled that in March, following a PIL filed by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), the high court issued an interim order staying the proposed demolition of the building. The public works department (PWD), which is the custodian of the structure, wanted to demolish it, stating it has become weak and poses danger for the occupants. However, heritage enthusiasts think the building is stable and only needs to be restored.
