Every year on January 24, National Girl Child Day is observed to raise public awareness about the inequalities that girls face in Indian society.
The day’s main goal, as set forth by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, is to raise awareness about the rights of girls, raise awareness about the importance of female education, health, and nutrition, and educate others about the inequalities that girls face in the country.
National Girl Child Day is commemorated across the country with planned events and public awareness campaigns focusing on child sex ratios and the creation of a healthy and safe environment for girls.
‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (Save the girl child, educate the girl child)’ is an example of a government-sponsored awareness campaign aimed at raising awareness and improving the effectiveness of welfare programmes for Indian girls.
The initiative began in Panipat, Haryana, in 2015, with an initial funding of 100 crores (US$13 million).
The government organises awareness programmes under the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (save the girl child, educate the girl child) scheme to raise public awareness about female foeticide and to create new chances for females in society on National Girl Child Day.
