In an era where technology intertwines every aspect of our lives, it serves as the invisible thread connecting humanity across borders. From simplifying mundane tasks to fostering groundbreaking innovations, technology has emerged as the cornerstone of modern society.

Behind this transformative force lie countless visionaries — scientists, innovators, and engineers — whose relentless dedication propels us toward a future of endless possibilities.

Every year, May 11 is observed as National Technology Day, dedicated to acknowledging and honoring the contributions made by technology in various fields. National Technology Day is celebrated across India to commemorate the country’s advancements in technology and innovation.

Historical Background

The genesis of National Technology Day dates back to the year 1998 when India conducted a series of nuclear bomb tests, known as Pokhran II, in the desert of Rajasthan.

Led by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and spearheaded by the eminent scientist Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, these tests marked a significant milestone in India’s technological journey.

Following the success of Pokhran II, India was recognized as the sixth nuclear power globally.

In recognition of this achievement and to celebrate India’s advancements in nuclear science and technology, Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared May 11 as National Technology Day.

Theme for 2024

Each year, the Technology Development Board (TDB) selects a theme for National Technology Day to focus attention on specific aspects of technology and innovation.

This year’s theme, “School to Startups – Inspiring Young Minds to Innovate,” underscores the importance of nurturing innovation among the youth and encouraging them to explore entrepreneurship in the technology sector.

The theme aims to ignite the creative spark in young minds and guide them towards harnessing their potential for technological innovation.

Celebrations and Activities

National Technology Day serves as an occasion to honor the contributions of scientists, researchers, engineers, and innovators who have propelled India’s technological growth. The day is marked by various events, including seminars, conferences, and exhibitions held across the country to showcase India’s technological prowess.

Additionally, the central government announces the recipients of the prestigious Rashtriya Vigyan Purashkar (National Science Awards), recognizing individuals and organizations for their exceptional contributions to science and technology.

Promoting Awareness and Education

Beyond celebration, National Technology Day also aims to raise awareness about the pivotal role of technology in everyday life. It serves as a reminder of the importance of technological literacy and encourages young minds to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

By fostering a culture of innovation and scientific inquiry, India aims to stay at the forefront of technological advancements and contribute to global progress.
