Navaratri 2023 Day 5: Worshipping Skanda Mata: The embodiment of motherly love

Team Udayavani, Oct 19, 2023, 8:00 AM IST

Today, Skanda Mata, the fifth incarnation of Goddess Durga is revered.

“Skanda” signifies Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva and Parvati, while “mata” denotes mother. Since Goddess Parvati is considered the mother of Kartikeya (Lord Skanda), also recognized as Murugan or Subramanya in diverse regions of India, she is venerated as ‘Skanda Mata.’

In Hindu mythology, Skandamata is portrayed with four arms, cradling her son Skanda or Kartikeya in her lap, and riding a lion. On occasion, she is also depicted clutching a lotus flower or a bell. She embodies the essence of maternal love and is hailed as the epitome of motherhood.

It is believed that worshipping Skanda Mata is akin to paying homage to Lord Skanda nestled in her lap, thereby bestowing devotees with blessings and grace from both deities. Goddess Skanda Mata confers power, prosperity, and genuine wisdom upon her devotees.

Skanda Mata treats her devotees with the care and affection of a mother, endowing them with strength and fortitude while dismantling obstacles from their path. Her blessings usher boundless peace, resolve dilemmas, and elevate devotees to a higher plane of consciousness.
