Malpe: Police have issued notice to 21 persons for allegedly trying to assault Praveen Chowgale, accused of murdering four members of a family in Nejar, when he was brought to the crime scene for Mahajar.
The incident took place on November 16, when the police had brought Chowgale to the victim’s house as part of the investigation procedure. At that time, an angry mob had gathered at the spot and tried to assault Chowgale. As the situation had turned tense, the police had to resort to a lathi charge to disperse the crowd.
Taking this incident seriously, police issued notices to those who tried to assault the accused while he was in police custody. Three have already been interrogated and others too will be called to the station for questioning, a police officer said.
Apart from this police also booked a person for a provocative social media post stating that locals “missed a golden opportunity to kill” the accused when he brought to the victim’s residence.
Demand for installation of CC camera
Notably, the police had a tough task in identifying the culprit as there was no CCTV footage in the nearby surroundings where the murders took place. Following these brutal murders, residents have demanded that CCTV cameras be installed at strategic locations in the area. Police have suggested that households install CCTV cameras for their safety.
Appropriate measures for security: SP
“A proposal has already been sent for the installation of CCTV cameras in the main parts of Nejaru and Hampanakatte. The Collector has given notice to the authorities concerned in this regard. After getting the approval, we will take steps to install additional street lights including CCTV cameras,” said SP Dr. Arun K.
