Starting June 1, 2024 individuals can now take their driving tests at private driving training centers instead of government RTOs. This is part of the new regulations announced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for obtaining a driving license in India.

Key pointers of the new regulations

Driving Tests at Private Institutions: Effective June 1, 2024, individuals can now take their driving tests at private driving training centers instead of government RTOs. These private institutions will be authorized to conduct the tests and issue certificates confirming license eligibility.

Focus on Environment: The new regulations emphasize environmental protection by phasing out approximately 900,000 old government vehicles and enforcing stricter car emission standards.

Stricter Penalties: While the fine for speeding remains between Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000, minors caught driving will face a substantial fine of Rs 25,000. Additionally, the vehicle owner’s registration card will be canceled, and the minor will be ineligible for a driving license until they turn 25 years old.

Simplified Application Process: The Ministry has streamlined the documentation required for obtaining a new license. The specific documents needed will depend on the type of vehicle, whether it is a two-wheeler or a four-wheeler. This change reduces the necessity for physical checkups at RTOs.

Application Process: The application process remains largely unchanged. Applications can be submitted online or offline at https://parivahan.gov.in/. The application fee varies based on the type of license. Applicants will need to visit the RTO to submit their documents and demonstrate their driving skills for license approval.
