India’s first Oscar winner Bhanu Athaiya dies in Mumbai home

Costume designer Bhanu Athaiya, India’s first Oscar winner, died at her home on Thursday after a prolonged illness, her daughter said.

She was 91. Athaiya, who won an Oscar for her work in the 1983 film “Gandhi,” passed away peacefully in her sleep, her daughter Radhika Gupta said.

Shaurya Chakra Award Winner Balwinder Singh Shot Dead at Home in Punjab

Shaurya Chakra award winner Balwinder Singh, who had fought against terrorism for years, was shot dead by two unidentified men in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district today. He and his family had remained on the hit list of terrorists for years.

The security provided by the state government to the 62-year-old was removed a year ago on the recommendation of the local police.

Torrential Rains: Flood-Like Situation in Karnataka

“Red alert has been sounded in 10 districts across the coastal, and northern regions of the state, as heavy rains are predicted to lash the area over the next 2-3 days due to low pressure and strong winds,” a Karnataka Meteorological Department official said.

All major dams in the Cauvery and the Krishna basins are brimming and their floodgates were opened. Officials said Kalaburagi, Yadgir and Bidar were severely affected as small streams were in spate with many lakes overflowing and inundating villages.

Sandalwood drug case: Bengaluru CCB raids Vivek Oberoi’s Mumbai residence in search of Aditya Alva

Following a tip-off, the Bengaluru Central Crime Branch (CCB) Thursday raided Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi’s Mumbai residence in search of Aditya Alva, one of the main accused in the Sandalwood drug case.

Alva is the son of late minister Jeevaraj Alva and brother-in-law of Vivek Oberoi. He is amongst the 12 accused in the Sandalwood drug scandal which is being investigated by the CCB.

Sabarimala temple in Kerala opens for devotees

The famed Lord Ayyappa temple here opened to devotees Saturday morning after remaining closed for over six months due to the coronavirus pandemic, with a few worshippers wearing masks and carrying COVID-19 negative certificate offering prayers.

The temple, which opened for the monthly puja on Friday evening, will allow pilgrims to offer prayers till October 21.

Landmark victory, New Zealand’s Ardern wins 2nd term in election

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern won a second term in office on Saturday in an election landslide of historic proportions.

With most votes counted, Ardern’s liberal Labour Party was winning 49% of the vote compared to 27% for its main challenger, the conservative National Party.
