Udupi: The District Police have written to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to install traffic signal lights at three important junctions on National Highway 66 in Udupi district, said Superintendent of Police Laxman Nimbargi speaking to media during the hour-long phone-in programme organised at the District Police Officeon Friday Dec 14th.

The three junctions were Ambalpady Junction and Kallianpur-Santhekatte Junction in Udupi and the Katapady Junction at Katapady near Udupi, informed the SP.

Due to the heavy vehicular movement at the three junctions, it is essential that traffic signals be installed here. Deploying policemen to control traffic at these junctions would not be of much help. Therefore the request has been sent.

Approval from ministry

The proposal which has been sent by the police to NHAI will be forwarded by it to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and National Highways for its approval. The installation of signal lights had been completed by the NHAI at a few places on National Highways in Mangaluru, he informed.

Responding to a query the SP said that a special team had been formed to crack the case of robbery of a senior citizen at Laxmindra Nagar in Manipal, when he was on a morning walk on December 2.

21 calls

During the phone in programme, a total of 21 calls were received. The co plaints included illegal stone mining, some persons riding two-wheelers at high speed on Malpe-Padukere Road, minors working at the Malpe Fisheries Harbour, some private buses being run without permits, use of shrill horns by vehicles and traffic problems.
