Bengaluru: State Home Minister Araga Jnanendra has clarified that the social media posts about the hike in the daily wages of the prisoners were fake.

Addressing the media on Wednesday he said, “There are a total of 15,000 prisoners in the state. They are paid Rs 200 daily. From that, Rs. 100 is deducted for food. The government has not penned down any circular on a hike in the amount. It is true that there are suggestions for increasing the daily wages, but they have not come to my table”.

“Around 50 percent of the prisoners work in the agricultural fields and several others involve themselves in producing artifacts, soaps, candles, etc. From this, the Home Department generates revenue. The talks are on to increase their wages from the revenue generated”, he added.

It can be noted that earlier, some miscreants taking to social media had created posts stating that the state government had decided to scale up the daily wages of prisoners. Some have even trolled and created memes saying, ‘life in prison was much better than the outside world’.
