Mangaluru: The city have decided against the use of plastic speed breakers and accordingly will stop the installation of plastic speed breakers in the city and henceforth, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) will be erecting bitumen speed breakers in the city.
“We were getting a number of complaints about the problems being caused by plastic speed breakers. Hence, we have decided not to go for them unless they are absolutely required,” said T.R. Suresh, City Police Commissioner.
Mr Suresh said that besides being a nuisance, plastic speed breakers were found to have a lower life span than the bitumen ones, particularly on roads witnessing heavy traffic movement.
He said that while the MCC erects speed breakers on the recommendation of the traffic police, the latter too erect a few whenever required.
The Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M. Manjunatha Shetty informed that the police were forced install plastic speed breakers as people demanded immediate solution to reduce vehicular speed on busy roads. The number of road accidents has drastically come down since the plastic speed breakers were installed, he claimed.
However, due to the public anger over the crude nature of such speed breakers, the traffic police have decided against their installation in future. As and when the existing ones wear out, the police will ask the MCC to erect bitumen speed breakers, as per standards specified by the Indian Road Congress, said Mr Shetty.
