New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday said that the income tax department will not initiate prosecution in cases of minor tax violations.
Speaking at a press conference held in New Delhi Sitharaman said that the move aims to ensure that people don’t have the fear that the tax department is on a prosecution spree.
“Prosecution will be launched only in deserving cases. For small tax payers, prosecution won’t be initiated,” she added.
In case of defaults below Rs 25 lakh, the income tax department can initiate prosecution after getting a nod from a collegium comprising two senior officials.
