No sacrifice selfies: Yogi Adityanath’s list of ‘don’ts’ for Bakr-Eid

Lucknow: A day ahead of the Bakr-Eid festival, the Yogi Adityanath government denied permission for sacrifice of the animals in the open in the state. Selfies during animal sacrifice have also been prohibited in the state.

In the last few years a trend has emerged where people post selfies clicked with the animal, meant for sacrifice both before and after the sacrifice on social media. Few of these images tend to be gory, and hence this diktat.

In a video conference, the Uttar Pradesh chief minister instructed the officials to ensure that sacrifice of animals was not done in the open on the occasion of Bakr-Eid, and that blood and offal is not dumped in open drains, so that religious sentiments of other communities are not hurt. He warned that strict action will be initiated against those found flouting the rules.

Apart from this the officials have been instructed to ensure that protected animals are not sacrificed on the occasion while taking adequate steps to maintain law and order situation.

Bakr-Eid or Eid al-Adha is a “festival of sacrifice”. Eid al-Adha honours the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to Allah’s command. Muslims worldwide celebrate Bakrid by sacrificing a male goat as a symbol of the sacrifice made by Ibrahim. The goat thus sacrificed is divided into three parts: one third of the share is given to the poor and needy; another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbours; and the remaining third is retained by the family.
