Kim Jong- un’s father Kim Jong-il, is said to have invented burritos in 2011, according to a North Korean government state news site.

Kim Jong-il, according to the Rodong Sinmun newspaper, devised the “wheat wrap” in 2011, just before he died of a heart attack. Despite a food deficit, the report claimed that sales of the dish are increasing.

According to the tabloid, Kim Jong-un is following in his father’s footsteps by showing a “meticulous interest” in the Mexican cuisine.

North Koreans can be seen munching burritos outside the Kumsong Food Factory in Pyongyang in State TV news video.

A painting of Kim Jong-il smirking in a kitchen where burritos were being cooked was also shown during the broadcast.

Those who have escaped North Korea, on the other hand, claim that burritos are practically non-existent there.

Most North Koreans, according to Hyun-seung Lee, who was born into an aristocratic North Korean family but escaped the country in 2014, couldn’t even imagine eating a burrito since they “don’t have money to buy foreign cuisine.”

According to the Rodong Sinmun, Kim Jong-il recommended that the “wheat wraps” be served with mineral water in the summer and hot tea in the winter.

Rowan Beard, a guide with Young Pioneer Tours, a company that specialises in arranging excursions to North Korea, claimed he had never seen burritos in Pyongyang.
