Old government well near Hiriyadka bus stand collapses; buried

Udupi: A 200-year-old well that was near the government bus stand of Hiriyadka near here, collapsed along with its protection wall on Friday June 28.

The well is 30-40 feet deep and a few days ago, the soil inside the well had caved in. Bommarabettu gram panchayat members, who sensed danger, had erected a circular barricade around the well to prevent any loss of life. Tahsildar and other officials had also visited the location.

Locally, the well was known as ‘Dharmada Baavi’ and the well was renowned to having water even during the summer. It is learnt the nearby hotel and other shops used to use water from this well.

After the well collapsed, tahsildar Pradeep Kurdekar, members of Bommarabettu gram panchayat and Hiriyadka police visited the spot and conducted inspection. It was decided that the well be buried since it was located in between Hiriyadka temple and bus stand. Hence, the two-century old open well was buried with around 15 to 20 loads of mud.
