One dead, several injured after car falls off Charmadi Ghat road

Belthangady: In a tragic incident, a car traveling from Kottigehara towards Ujire lost control near the second turn of Charmadi Ghat road and rolled off 100 meters into a gorge on Sunday night. A woman was killed and several others have been injured in the road mishap.
According to sources, the accident occurred when Ujire Gram Panchayat President Pushpavati R. Shetty and her family members were returning from Koppa after attending a function. It is claimed that a break failure led to the accident.
Pushpavati R. Shetty (62) along with her relative Sarojini Shetty (55) and her daughter Poornima Shetty (38), who were in the car, sustained serious injuries.
Pushpavati’s grandchildren, Samridh (13) and Sakshi (11), sustained minor injuries. The driver, identified as Arun, was also injured.
The injured were given first aid at a hospital in Kakkinje. Purnima and Sarojini were later referred to a private hospital in Mangaluru for further treatment. However, Sarojini Shetty (55) succumbed to her injuries at the hospital in Mangaluru. The rest of the injured have been admitted to a private hospital in Ujire.
Belthangady traffic police reached the spot and registered a case.
