“Operation Sunset”: Udupi Police conducts surprise checks and registers multiple cases

Udupi district police conducted a special drive named “Operation Sunset” on Saturday evening, March 18, to keep a check on anti-social elements and enforce the law.

The police formed special teams, and checkpoints were set up at strategic locations. Vehicles were thoroughly checked, and cases were registered against those creating public nuisance, police said in a press release.

As a result of the surprise checks, three individuals were arrested for possessing Ganja and MDMA in small quantities. Another vehicle was seized for carrying 45 liters of alcohol, and a case was registered. More than 60 habitual offenders/accused were checked with the help of fingerprint scanners.

The police also checked vehicles that did not have proper documents, or fake number plates, and drivers for drinking and driving. As many as 32 cases were booked for drinking and driving, and 29 vehicles were seized for not having proper number plates or having fake ones. A total of 258 cases of traffic violations were registered, and a fine of approximately Rs 1,30,000 was collected, police said.

Police said that they also registered 44 cases under COTPA for selling tobacco and related products in restricted areas and 17 cases against people for consuming alcohol in public areas, which is prohibited. Surprise checks were conducted against 65 rowdy elements to keep a tab on their movements.
