Organ donation: Family of accident victim gives lifeline to needy patients

Manipal: The family of a 46-year-old man gave a new lease to needy patients by deciding to donate his organs.
Joe Victor Lewis from Kemmannu, Udupi was admitted to Kasturba Hospital, Manipal after he sustained severe injuries in a road accident. His condition deteriorated rapidly despite exhaustive medical intervention. A panel of expert doctors, in accordance with the Transplantation of Human Organ Act 1994, officially declared him brain dead whereafter his family made the courageous decision to donate his viable organs.
Following the protocols outlined by Jeevasarthakathe, SOTTO, Bangalore, Lewis’s liver was sent KMC Hospital, Ambedkar Circle, Mangaluru, one kidney to Yenepoya Hospital, Mangaluru and another kidney to Indiana Hospital, Mangaluru. Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, retained Corneas and Skin for registered patients awaiting transplantation.
Dr. Avinash Shetty, the Medical Superintendent hailed the act of organ donation as a noble endeavour to save lives, urging others to embrace such altruism. He extended heartfelt gratitude to Lewis’s family for their compassionate decision.
