Zameer Ahmed Khan

Bengaluru: Amidst the ongoing by-elections, the Waqf property issue has created ripples within the Congress party, with over 20 MLAs from the ruling party expressing discontent with Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan’s recent statements. The legislators have lodged a complaint with AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, emphasizing that Zameer’s statements are causing political embarrassment for the party and government.

The complaint marks a united front from 23 first-time MLAs representing the Vokkaliga, Lingayat, and Dalit communities, who requested immediate intervention by Kharge to prevent further disruption. They noted that while the government has gained goodwill through developmental initiatives and guarantee schemes, Zameer’s statements on the Waqf issue are sending a conflicting message to the public. Citing previous controversies, including comments surrounding the recent Shiggaon by-election candidate selection, they urged restraint on the minister’s public remarks.

In the letter, Congress MLAs stressed, “At a time when everything is stable, the Waqf topic is unnecessary. Zameer’s statements have repeatedly embarrassed the party, and without control, it could incur a heavy political cost in the state.”

They highlighted that while several senior minority MLAs conduct themselves with dignity, Zameer’s individual behavior is out of line, threatening the party’s public image. The MLAs urged Kharge to address this promptly to safeguard the party’s reputation.
