Pachanady garbage heap collapse: District administration decides to relocate victims

Mangaluru: The garbage heap which crashed down hill from the dumping yard at Pachanady and created an environment of fear among the residents here has been controlled to an extent on Thursday however, the danger it poses cannot be ignored. The garbage came down like a flowing river, razed down the areca nut farms, houses and temple in Mandara area and the locals experiencing much problem due to the garbage and the flowing dirty water.

On Thursday morning, DC Sasikanth Senthil visited the affected location and listened to the complaints of the residents there. He directed the corporation officials to provide relocation facility to the affected households immediately. The DC decided to consult experts and create a separate committee for the disposal of the huge amounts of garbage presently deposited at areca nut farms – road – temple and wells.

The garbage heap has annexed around 4 acres of land to a length of a kilometer in Mandara area including areca nut-coconut farms on Wednesday. Presently, even though the garbage is not slipping down, there still lies a possibility wherein anything is possible at anytime and due to this, more than 10 houses are facing imminent danger. A large drain and railway tracks lie in the vicinity.

As many as 10 houses in Mandara area are I danger. Direction has been given to relocate them into the rehabilitation centre temporarily. Soon after the monsoon, experts will be consulted regarding the disposing of the garbage and recommended action will be taken – Sasikanth Senthil, Deputy Commissioner, Dakshina Kannada
