Case synopsis

Mohan had introduced himself to the 26 years old unmarried lady from Paivalike as one Sudhakar, an employee of an insurance company and promised to marry her. He had then asked her come dressed with her jewellery to State Bank bus stand in Mangaluru. Accordingly she had come to the bus stop on Mar 20, 2006 accompanied by her aunt. All the three had lunch together at a hotel there.

Later, the aunt was sent back to home and the coupe left for Madikeri. After booking a lodge there, he raped the lady. The following day, he informed her that they were going to the temple and asked her to leave back the jewellery. He then took her to the KSRTC bus stand where he gave the lady a cyanide laced tablet in the guise of a tablet for contraceptive, which he convinced the lady to consume in the toilet at the bus stand. The lady consumed the tablet only to drop dead in the toilet of the bus stand. Meanwhile, Mohan made off with the gold jewellery, states the case registered against the accused at Madikeri City police station.

The family of the deceased presumed that the lady was happily married and hence did not register any missing complaint with the police. When cyanide Mohan was finally arrested by the cops on Oct 21, 2009, the accused revealed and accepted to the murder of the lady from Paivalike during interrogation. Later, the accused was taken to Manjeshwar police station where he was positively recognized by the aunt of the deceased lady.

The accused Mohan Kumar is presently incarcerated at Hindalaga jail in Belagavi and hence the investigation of this case in the court was conducted via video conference. During the questioning, the accused maintained that he had not committed any mistake. The judge had advised Mohan to appoint a government lawyer to argue on his behalf, but he refused the offer and instead claimed that he himself would argue on his own behalf, inform sources.

Investigation

41 witnesses, 50 evidences and 42 situational witnesses were examined in the investigation of this case. Those who had bought the jewellery of the deceased lady gave witness in the court. Kidnap and rape allegation has not been proved. Public prosecutor Judith O M Crasta argued on behalf of the prosecution.

Two women who had been ensnared by cyanide Mohan are still alive. They have been made witness for every case against the accused. The statements of the doctors, the lodge staff and call details played a vital role in proving the accused guilty of his crime.

Cyanide Mohan is accused of murdering around 20 ladies and 5 more cases remain pending to be proved.
