Paper holograms on liquor bottles likely to be replaced by polyester labels

Bengaluru: To avoid any loss on exchequers, the state government on Monday informed the Karnataka High Court that it has intended to replace the paper-based hologram-embedded excise adhesive labels (EAL) on alcohol bottles with polyester-based excise adhesive labels. The government likewise said that 15 states the nation over have officially executed this measure.

The public interest litigation was documented by Ramprasad, a social worker and Rajesh Babu, Secretary of Swaccha, a city-based NGO for waste management and a division bench headed by Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari was hearing. The candidates have tested the utilization of these labels saying that they were non-biodegradable and non-recoverable.

The state government said that consistently Rs 35 crore worth of paper-based hologram embedded excise adhesive label are squandered by buyers every month.

It was also submitted that a similar issue was being heard before the National Green Tribunal. The issue was dismissed.
