A private bus traveling from Manipal to Herga veered off course after the driver lost control of the vehicle while it was in reverse gear here on Thursday evening resulting in damage to the rear portion of the bus.

Reportedly as the bus neared Kelaparkala, the driver lost consciousness and let go of the steering wheel. The vehicle moved in reverse and the passengers onboard attempted to disembark the bus in the chaotic situation. The bus finally came to a halt after skidding off the road.

If the bus had moved any further there was a risk of collision with electric poles.

Approximately 30-40 passengers were aboard during the incident. The driver was immediately admitted to a local hospital in Manipal for treatment.

The bus passengers were transferred to another bus.
