Mangaluru/Udupi: After a hiatus, parts of the coastal region received good rainfall on Thursday, giving respite from the rising temperatures.

In some parts, rainfall began late on Wednesday and early in the morning on Thursday, bringing the mercury down.

The temperatures that had started rising, fell to 30 degrees Celcius on Thursday from the 31-32 deg celsius range earlier in Mangaluru. The minimum temperature recorded was 24 degrees Celcius. The temperatures are expected to hover between 23 degrees Celcius and 30 degrees Celcius for the next week, the Indian Meteorological Department predicted.

The downpour has also quickened the Monsoon-dependent agricultural activities. As the soil was moistened by the rains, some farmers began tilling the land on Thursday.

More rainfall predicted

IMD predicts the downpour to continue for the next two days. It has issued a ‘yellow alert’ for Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannad districts for June 17 and 18. The weather report raised the alert warning to “Orange” for June 19 and 20 for the three districts.

Fishermen warned not to venture into the sea

The heavy winds accompanied by high waves have made the seas rough, IMD said and warned fishermen not to venture into the sea. Winds with speeds of 40 to 50 kmph are expected which could raise sea waves up to 2.6 meters in height, IMD said in its weather bulletin.
